Kamalin is cursed. She is princess of a land that experiences constant famines and plagues. She can't hold onto a regent for more than a few days until they resign, convinced that Kamalin is a witch. She still remembers the war that killed her family...

Tania is angry. The royal soldiers had knocked on her family's door, demanding that every boy be taken away to be trained for soldiers. When Tania, leading her family of orphans, had refused to give up her brothers, the soldiers had beat her bloody and knocked her into a corner. Then they had taken her beloved brothers - and, for good measure, her only sisters. Tania, practically a raw hunk of walking and talking meat, had made it to a cave. She still wants to get revenge on the princess, Kamalin. And she still specialises in curse magic...

Vaulscar is poor. Even through the war, the famines, and the curses, he had managed to stay alive. But when the soldiers came looking for men, he offered to pay instead of becoming a soldier. Now he's penniless, and will do anything for pay, whatever the consequences. As long as he gets money...

Portray is evil. He wants Soleil, a huge empire, to conquer all. He's determined to do anything, and so causes a domino chain of accidents to happen to weaken Zeldor...
